Before entering this facility, I had never sewn a day in my life, well, not with a sewing machine. I did however one time attempt hand stitching a silk shirt that I designed and cut out of an old sheet when I was 15 years old.

In late January, OCE laundry at OSP was approached by one of our partners, they had some major machinery issues causing their tunnel washers to stop operating as well as some significant issues with their dryer units. This affected their capabilities to produce clean linen for their customers. They asked if we would be willing to take on some additional weight to what they were already sending us, during the peak linen season (winter). After some negotiations, we agreed to take on the additional work and began processing linen so patients would not go without. To date, the OSP laundry has processed a total of 489,338 lbs. of extra linen. And laundry sort has handled 3,888 extra laundry carts.

Voices is a platform for the people in OCE programs to have a platform to speak to the community. Voices consists of both videos and letters from program participants, allowing them to express their thoughts by speaking from the heart. This series offers a chance for the public to see they are people who prefer to speak for themselves. They are aware of the societal climate pushing for change and they are not in complete agreement.

I have worked for OCE for six years as an office clerk in our industrial laundry facility and sign shop. I've handled database management, inventory, purchasing, shipping and receiving. And of course, when I am available, I help on the production floor.

For Steve Ryan, 2022 was pivotal for his in-plants move toward in-house envelope conversion. The general manager of Oregon Corrections Enterprises says that while discussions to do so started two decades ago, the technology at the time, which Ryan refers to as old-style, non-automated equipment," required a great deal of space and operator know-how. Since that time, he says, the equipment has become highly automated a better fit for his prison in-plants needs.
