Heath: Building Skills and Integrity Through OCE Programs

Heath joined the Oregon Corrections Enterprises (OCE) programs in 2022, starting his journey in the Laundry shop. Initially working in the Folding area, Heath's dedication and commitment have allowed him to progress into the Pressing area, where he continues to excel.

Achievements and Responsibilities

Throughout his time in OCE, Heath has earned certifications in all areas of the laundry process, showcasing his mastery of the operations. He has also achieved his OCE forklift certification, further expanding his skill set. Heath reflects on his journey in Laundry:

"I try to do a little of everything so that if someone is out for some reason, I can cover for them and keep things going. I work extra shifts on the weekend to keep the laundry going. All of us in Laundry view ourselves as one big team. We know what tasks need to be completed and so we go and get them done. We're a team, it takes all of us."

Starting with sorting and folding institutional clothing, Heath's initiative opened opportunities to help with pressing. He now works as a garment presser for the Garment Factory, including Prison Blues products and specialty lines. His tasks include folding, pressing, wrapping, and packaging for both internal and contract work from outside vendors.

Recognized for his leadership and reliability, Heath often trains others, handles clerk work, and completes paperwork essential for the laundry production supervisor. Heath's natural ability to find solutions quickly and his eagerness to learn have made him an indispensable member of the team.

Personal Growth and Preparation for the Future

Heath emphasizes the transformative impact of working with OCE:

"OCE is the closest thing to working an outside job as I could ever imagine. You start from the bottom and prove your way up through production, quality, and willingness to learn new things. We're rewarded for good work ethic and self-motivation.

This job has helped me to develop leadership skills and the ability to see potential in others as well. Integrity is everything; I am my own person and I won't let prison take that away from me. My job at OCE supports that and gives me the opportunity to develop the skills and values that will help me to be successful upon my rejoining the community."

Heath shares how OCE provides a sense of normalcy and purpose:

"It's easy to forget that I am in prison while I am at work. All the prison stuff stops at the door, there's no prison drama, no posturing, and no one is forced to be in this job. The supervisors all treat us like normal people, and I feel like I have a real job that has meaning.

Being involved with OCE makes me rethink my actions when dealing with decisions I make outside of work. I am more focused on the long-term effects of my actions. I set goals and work to achieve them. This helps me avoid getting in any situations that might affect me negatively. I have a good-paying job and good work conditions with supervisors who treat me well. I remember these things and it's easy to keep a straight program."

A Personal Reflection

In addition to his professional achievements, Heath wanted to share a personal note about the challenges and rewards of maintaining integrity:

"Keeping integrity and moral as an AIC can be more than difficult. After society decides you aren't worthy, finding worth is more than money. I have got a wonderful brother, a devoted woman, and God to remind me I still have some worth. Even with them supporting me, the struggle can be bigger than me. OCE allows me to put all I have into my work and appreciates me for it.

I took the opportunity to press a coat made for Jelly Roll. I took so much pride in that coat knowing it will matter. Thanks to my loved ones and OCE for this opportunity."
Heath's story is a testament to the power of work, dedication, and support in fostering personal growth and preparing individuals for life beyond incarceration. His journey exemplifies the values and impact of OCE programs.
