OCE is happy to announce that the Braille Center officially opened at OSP on July 1. This program is a grant funded program through the Bureau of Justice Assistance with the goal of gaining nationally recognized braille transcription certification and reducing recidivism. We have partnered with the National Prison Braille Network which provides the opportunity for anyone who graduates from a prison braille transcription center to join an apprenticeship program.

We began our first day with 5 enthusiastic AIC's that powered through the UEB/Literary braille transcription course that is offered through the National Federation for the Blind. Currently we are up to 8 AIC's and have an open active recruitment with the hope of adding 2 more to complete our first cohort of 10 AIC's. We will begin recruiting in September for the next cohort of 10 with an official start date of January 2025. We just received our new cubicles last week so the work areas are finally completed. The AIC's are coming along in their braille journey very quickly. The goal is to become certified and start producing textbooks for visually impaired braille students throughout Oregon in the years to come.
