Participants learn to convert printed and digital content into Unified English Braille (UEB) and other specialized formats, supporting education, employment, and community inclusion. This program combines technical precision with accessibility standards, preparing participants for careers in braille transcription and related fields.

Skills & Experience Gained

Participants develop specialized skills in braille transcription and accessibility services, including:
  • Accurate conversion of print and digital text into Unified English Braille (UEB)
  • Understanding of Braille Authority of North America (BANA) guidelines
  • Proofreading and quality assurance for braille documents
  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for accessible digital formats
  • Preparation of tactile graphics and layout for educational materials
  • Compliance with national accessibility standards
  • Workflow management for large-scale transcription projects


Equipment & Technology

Participants gain experience with tools and technology used in professional braille production environments, including:
  • Braille embossers and tactile graphics printers

Participants are introduced to industry-standard software for braille transcription and document accessibility, including:
  • Duxbury Braille Translator (DBT)
  • Braille2000
  • TactileView for graphics
  • OCR and document conversion tools
  • Microsoft Office Suite for formatting and preparation
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro for accessible PDFs
